The Black City
Many scholars have devoted their lifetimes to uncovering the mystery of one of the most dreaded entities known in Thalesmere, yet the entire accumulated knowledge about the Black City can barely fill a single page in a book. The earliest documented mentions of the Black City, appear in ancient elven literature, which describe the city as the source of all evil. What is known is that the Black City exists within its own Plane, yet it can (and often does) travel through other worlds, appearing at various locations and times in a seemingly random fashion.
Throughout history, every appearance of the Black City, has been followed by wars, plagues and natural disasters, the most infamous of which being the Convergence and subsequent monster infestations. Additionally, the Black City is often associated with the Men in Black, mysterious entities which take on the appearance of bald human males, dressed in black robes, with green eyes that glow in the dark. The true extent of their abilities, is not known, but they have been documented to kill even extremely powerful elven mages, with ease.
The last known appearance of the Black City, happened five hundred years ago and it was followed by the outbreak of the Rat Plague, which decimated the northern continents in the three years it took until a cure was finally developed. Various Catur legends, which mention a "place of evil", may also be references to the Black City.
Attempts to study the Black City usually fail due to several reasons, such as the not-uncommon cases of scholars disappearing, or dieing mysteriously. Additionally, although the city has often been observed from afar, no one who has ever attempted to approach it, has ever returned.
